8.15.08 -- Free Speech at Covenant: One Year Later?

Sorry for spamming you all with invitations, but I haven't been in touch with many people @ Covenant lately in regard to policies for student publications. And also I wanted to upgrade this wiki so editing it would be easier, in case I need to use it in the future.

If any of you are more in the know than I am, can you answer just one question: What is the current state of this policy? Is the administration still seeking to assert more control over the Bagpipe, drama productions, etc.? And, if so, how are the students responding? Are they aware of the issue?

8.27.07

Jonathan Davis has posted the new policy in its entirety on his blog. The official title of the policy is "Role of Advisors," but that seems to be of a euphemism, considering the job description outlined in the document.

8.25.07

Matt Barker and others have made excellent points on the Bagpipe ScotsAlumni discussion thread. In response to what he said, and to Lauri's comments on the ongoing discussion at Ryan Davidson's blog, I have written an explanation of what motivates me in this discussion.

In addition to what I say in that essay, I also would like to emphasize the following:

  1. I don't want this to be a rush to judgment. I appreciate Matt's call for us to get all the facts first, and will try to do so, as time permits.
  2. I put this up here quickly so something would exist, not as the final word. Wiki is all about change and discussion - that's what I love about it. Primarily, I put it up here so that there would be an alternative to Ryan Davidson's Facebook group, for people who are concerned like he is, but want to express that concern in a more measured way.
  3. I don't anticipate actually following through with the action steps outlined below until we have a clearly defined plan. Still, I do believe time is of the essence because I know at Covenant, we could have endless Wittenburg Door discussions on issues and nothing would ever get done. It's difficult to balance zeal with level-headedness.

Love the initiative this shows, but before I'm ready to join up I'd like a little more documentation and context. Can someone post the new policy in its entirety (or show me where I'm missing it if it's already here)? I've seen parts of it quoted elsewhere, but it ought to be here, too. A copy of the old policy for comparison would be helpful as well. Are there examples of past student publications that can be posted here? Can someone outline the nature of publication oversight at the college prior to the current controversy? For all the concern about journalism being compromised at the college, there's been very little primary source reporting on this. Provide that, and if the concern is warranted, I'll be happy to lend my support.—Matt Barker

Understandable. I was reading what you said on the ScotsAlumni board, and I think it showed good sense. I'll probably speak to the Kaufmanns today. Hopefully, they can provide something of what you want.

I think Anna was saying something to the effect that the policy change may only be recorded in the minutes of Senate. But I hope there's something more obvious than that to point to.
